Power over Parkinson's
Power over Parkinson's is a 12-week exercise education program for adults living with Parkinson's Disease. According to the National Parkinson Foundation, Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative brain disorder affecting nearly one million Americans.
For people with PD, exercise has been shown to be a vital component to maintaining balance, mobility, and daily living activities. Research has shown that exercise can improve gait, balance, tremors, flexibility, grip strength, and motor coordination.
Power over Parkinson's participants and caregivers will receive an initial assessment and orientation with the program coordinator and fitness trainer. The coordinator and trainer will develop a series of exercise programs, nutrition, and education sessions designed to help people affected by PD and their caregivers during and after the 12 week session. The exercise class ratio is 5:1 with training opportunities for caregivers. Activities include chair exercises, stretching, aerobic activity, and resistance training. Nutrition classes will also be held as part of the program. The cost for Power over Parkinson's includes group exercise classes, education and nutrition sessions. Caregivers are welcome to attend classes at no additional cost.
